For Sale - 1973 Penske 911E Targa (IROC Prototype)

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of Porsche history. As featured in the May 2009 issue of Excellence magazine, the 1973 Penske Porsche is a 911E Targa upgraded with RS/RSR components. The 911 is 1 of 2 built by Porsche for Roger Penske and Mark Donohue. Penske and Donohue spec'd out the car to see, conceptually, how the 911 might perform as a potential IROC race car. Donohue describes this car in his book "The Unfair Advantage" as one he was "kind of jealous" over. The car was later given to Roger Penske's wife as a daily
driver.

It came with special parts (hill climbing gears, RS fenders, wide Fuchs, etc.) ordered from the Porsche factory. The car was originally silver over which Mr. Penske painted Sunoco Blue. The restoration brought the paint down to bare metal, silver paint applied, then Sunoco blue. As a final touch, Mr. Penske's own signature is under the gas lid.

The car has a little over 2000 'sorting miles' on the odometer after a complete, ground-up restoration.

The car was purchased by the current owner in August 1998 at the RM Auction in Monterey, CA. It has not been publicly shown in 10 years. All the numbers match. Included in the sale are personalized "PENSKE" license plates for both California and Arizona.
